Shopify Image SEO Guide for Beginners

If you sell on Shopify, your product images are one of the most powerful — and most overlooked — SEO assets you have.

Google Images drives millions of shopping searches every day. Sellers who optimize their images show up. Sellers who don't, don't.

This guide covers exactly what to do.

1. Rename files before uploading

Shopify does not rename files for you. Whatever filename you upload is what Google sees.

Bad: IMG_4821.jpg

Good: navy-blue-linen-tote-bag.jpg

Use hyphens, not underscores. Keep it descriptive but concise. Include your primary keyword naturally.

2. Write alt text for every product image

Alt text tells Google what your image shows. Shopify lets you set it per image in the product editor.

Formula: [product type] [color] [material] [key feature] [use case]

Example:

navy blue linen tote bag with leather handles for women

Avoid:

  • Leaving it blank
  • Stuffing keywords ("best cheap tote bag buy online tote bag")
  • Generic text ("product image 1")

3. Compress before uploading

Large images slow your store. Slow stores lose rankings and conversions.

Target file sizes:

  • Product hero images: under 200 KB
  • Thumbnail / gallery images: under 100 KB

Use WebP format where possible — it's 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same quality.

4. Use consistent image dimensions

Pick one aspect ratio for product images and stick to it. Shopify recommends 2048 × 2048 px (1:1 square) for maximum zoom quality while keeping file sizes manageable.

Inconsistent dimensions create a choppy grid on your collection pages and signal low-quality content to Google.

5. Add image titles and metadata

Beyond alt text, embedded metadata (title, copyright, description) helps Google understand image context and ownership. This matters especially for:

  • Protecting your original product photography
  • Reinforcing keyword relevance
  • Showing up in Google image licensing panels

ImgSEO automates this — it generates filenames, alt text, titles, tags, and embedded EXIF metadata from a single upload.
